Follow these steps to make sure you get your Gusto discount:
Step 1: Click on our referral link and complete your details to start the process.

You have the option to either click on “Sign up with Google” to link your Gusto account to your Google account, or enter the following information to complete your free Gusto account:
- Your first name

Step 2: Check your email
You will then be prompted to check your email.
Optionally, you can use the drop-down menu and the Submit button below to tell Gusto how you heard about them.
After checking your email, you should see an email from Gusto.
Click the “Verify your email” button.
Step 3: Tell Gusto the type of people you plan to hire.
After confirming your email, you start creating your company profile on Gusto.
The first step is to tell Gusto about all the different types of people you will be paying using Gusto.Here’s what each option means:
- Myself: Select this option if you intend to list yourself on the payroll as a W-2 employee—for example, as an owner-shareholder of an S corporation who must pay yourself reasonable compensation as W-2 wages from your S corporation.
- Employees in the United States: Select this option if you intend to hire domestic workers.
- Non-US employees: Select this option if you intend to hire international workers.
- Contractors in the United States: Select this option if you intend to hire local independent contractors.
- Non-US contractors: Select this option if you intend to hire international independent contractors.
- Sellers: Select this option if you intend to pay your client’s vendors through Gusto.
You must select all that apply.
Step 4: Continue telling Gusto about your business.
Next, Gusto will ask you a series of questions about your business. I have listed them all below:
- How does your company currently manage payroll?
- We are new to managing payroll
- We use another online payroll software
- We do it by hand
- Is your company registered as an employer with the IRS? If you are registered, your company must have a Federal EIN (Employer Identification Number) from the IRS. If not, you can go ahead, but you must register with the IRS before your company can pay people.
- Do you have a company bank account? If you do this, Gusto will collect your bank details later. If not, that’s fine, but you need to open a company checking account before your company can pay people.
- Already hired your first team member?
- Yes
- Not yet (select this option if you’re actively hiring or haven’t started yet)
- How many team members do you plan to pay in the US? Gusto uses this information to make recommendations based on the size of your company. If you’re not sure, share your best guess.

- In which US state(s) do you and your employees work?
- (You choose the states where you and your employees work.)
- Do you have an accountant or bookkeeper helping your business? Many customers add their accountants to their Gusto account to access key information, set up accounting integrations, and help manage payroll.

- Does your company want to offer health benefits to your employees? Offering health benefits is a great way to attract and retain talent. With Gusto, you can manage your health benefits in the same place as your payroll.

Answer these questions correctly as this will help Gusto determine which Gusto plan is right for you.
Step 5: Choose your Gusto package.
Gusto will then provide you with a suggested package based on your previous answers to the questions.
Now, I had answered “Yes” to the health insurance and 401(k) plan questions, so he suggested the Plus plan.
If you don’t currently offer these benefits to your employees, you can use the “Simple” plan, which is currently $49 per month and $6 per person.
Gusto even has a special plan for single-shareholder-employee S corporations that need a payroll platform: the Solo plan. This plan is also currently $49 per month plus $6 per person.

You can change your layout selection by clicking the pencil-drawn “Edit” button in the upper right-hand corner of the top box on the screen.

Step 6: Add payroll information.
Once you’ve selected your plan, you’ll be asked to add more salary details, including:
- If you want another administrator for your Gusto account
- Your company address
- Your company’s EIN code
- Your company’s bank account information (you will be asked to connect through Plaid)
- The payment schedule you want for your company
