Have you ever felt like there is a “ceiling” to how much money you make?
You have goals and objectives, but for some reason your business income seems so get stuck at a certain point.
I have felt it.
My first agency business was struggling to break $3,000 a month while I owned it.
Then I was stuck with my blog for a long time at $5,000 a month.
I was broke and within a few years my new normal was my $25,000 a month teaching job.
It was a healthy salary, but of course you always want to grow.
I felt “smart enough” to build a million dollar a year business, but for a long time it never happened.
You can be especially frustrated when you see others making more money doing the same things as you.
I asked myself, “Why am I stuck?” I ask the question.
As an entrepreneur, you’re probably used to solving your own problems.
When I hit a ceiling, I always go through a period of self-reflection to try to figure out why I’m stuck.
What I don’t do, or what I do ineffectively, or perhaps what I lack entirely, holds me back.
Here are some thoughts that crossed my mind…
- Is it the market or the industry I’m in or what I’m selling that’s holding me back?
. - I’m not doing enough – more marketing, more advertising media, better sales funnels, more content is what I need.
. - I am very comfortable. I already make better “good money” than the average working person, so I’m not hungry to push.
. - I feel exhausted when I see what other people are doing to grow, it’s so hard to compete.
. - I am confused on the right next step. There are things I know I need to do, but they take time, money, and resources, and I don’t want to waste all that effort on something that won’t work.
. - Maybe I should start an entirely new product or service, or even a new sister business with my current business. Something new is needed.
. - I have to innovate and try completely different ideas.
. - No, I have to double down on what’s already working, just gradually improve and the results will come.
.
As you can see, there is a lot of thought going on. Maybe you can keep in touch.
What is the answer?
I wish I could tell you the right thing.
Unfortunately, as I have come to understand deeply over the past 25 years as an entrepreneur – there is no answer.
I can tell you that there are basics that need to be in place and it’s always smart to work on them.
For example…
- More case studies/reports with happy customers are always needed, especially if you don’t have any.
. - Your pricing model should make sense. To keep growing, you need profit margins to stop cash flow.
. - You can’t do it all by yourself. Lack of recruitment is almost always the main obstacle that slows down development.
. - You are not getting enough people to see your offer. More marketing is needed.
. - What you’re selling should provide significant value to a group of people, ideally something they’re willing to pay for over and over again.
.
I could list hundreds of such bullet points. They are the components to create a business development machine.
I’m sure as you read this you thought… I know all of them!
It makes sense. No rocket science here.
I agree. I came to the same conclusion.
I usually know what I need to do to grow. Chances are you do too.
So what’s stopping us?
Self-imposed limitations.
It’s a difficult reality to come to terms with emotionally, but we generally hold ourselves back from growing up.
We do trivial things.
We cannot promise a direction.
Even if we don’t know how to do something, we always know where to go to learn or hire someone to do it for us.
There are no real obstacles other than deciding in our own mind where to focus energy each day.
